Comics With ADD – Is It Possible To Be Funny And Focused?

I’m Jerrold and I’m a stand up comedian…and a graphic designer…and a blogger…and a wanna-be actor, director, script writer, video editor, podcaster, marketing guru and a gazillion more things. In other words, I’m ADD with too much on my plate and a bunch of half-assed projects that may or may not get done. I’m a comic with ADD and I wonder is it possible to be funny and focused?

It’s not easy being a comedian, we know this. What’s even harder is being a disciplined comedian. Knowing that through all adversity, you have to write, recite, memorize, test at open mics, rewrite, retest and ultimately turn your random jokes and bits into your next masterpiece. But how are you supposed to do that when you got your thumb up your ass worried about the other 50 things you ain’t going to get done the same night?

It sucks being ADD. I have enough material to do two one-hour specials. But I can’t sit still enough to finish a 2 minute bit. Thank God I can freestyle, lol.

Oh yea, here’s a great blog of mine on HOSTING

Some of my comedy buddies are the most undisciplined bastards on the planet! Like myself, they want to write jokes. They want to write sketches. They want to host podcasts. These idiots want to be comedy bloggers, storytellers, authors, TV stars and a million other things. The problem is that the more you add to you’re plate, the LESS YOU GET DONE!!

How many times have you sat your ADD ass down and said, “I’m going to work on this bit and nothing else. I’m not going to look at anything else…just this joke.” And you start off great. You have the notes for the bit in front of you and you’re ready to dive in. Then for some dumb reason you decide to look at your phone. Then maybe check Twitter, juuuust to see if anything is going on…OF COURSE SOMETHING’S GOING ON, IT’S SOCIAL MEDIA!!! Half the damn world is on it!! Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and the rest of these distracting ass social sites suck the life out of us and really eff up the mind of people like me who can’t concentrate to begin with.

So now thanks to this addiction, you’ve spent the last 2 hours stalking your friends and few chicks/dudes you want, added your 2 cents to some stupid ass discussion you know nothing about and on Youtube you learned how penguins fuck. Whoopty-effing doo! Congratulations, you have accomplished diddly squat!! You wasted the whole night and all you have to show for it is a sore ass and more viruses due to your porn addiction…idiot.

Now that you know you have a problem, this questions becomes: How the hell am I going to be a great comedian when I can’t concentrate long enough to achieve anything??

Let me tell you something. This blog is being written by the most ADD asshole in existence! Just to write this damn thing required me to shut out the whole world, put everything else (stuff I also feel needs to be done RIGHT THIS SECOND) to the side and leave my phone in the other room. I have a notebook full of notes for this blog. I collected them while I was working on project “71” of 500. I knew I would eventually get back to writing this, so I kept updating my notes.

Oh yea, speaking of being an asshole…here’s a blog on NOT BEING AN ASSHOLE

So the question becomes: Jerrold, how do I stay focused??

Well I have a system that works for me and maybe it could help you as well.

  • LEAVE YOUR COMFORT ZONE.

Working away from home works for me. When I sit at home, I get easily distracted and move on to other things. There is also the family that will easily divert you from accomplishing goals. I usually get in my truck and go somewhere secluded. Take only what I want to work on – a joke, a sketch or podcast notes. JUST WHAT I WANT TO WORK ON. The less you have with you, the more you get done.

  •  SCHEDULE BY IMPORTANCE.

This is a necessity. I have 50 projects to do that I know will be forgotten if I don’t write them down. But even more important than writing them down, is putting them in an order of operations that guarantee they can be done on a day-to-day basis. Each day is scheduled on my iPhone to alarm me at certain times that these things can be done. I pick 3 projects I want to accomplish by priority and do those things. This way I get shit done everyday and by week’s end, 15 of my 50 projects are done. Sometimes I can do more, sometimes less.

The idea is that when time opens up for whatever reason, having a premade to-do list ensures I don’t spend that time trying to figure out what to do, it’s right in front of me.

  • CREATE AN “ACCOUNTABILITY CREW”

This is a great idea! Create a team of comics designed to help each other reach goals. The “Team” can be extremely effective in keeping each member focused and “accountable” for their successes or lack thereof. The “Accountability Team” calls, texts or “facetime” each other and discusses things they want to accomplish over the next few days to a week. Then we check in with each other to see why we did or didn’t achieve the projected goals. This is an incredible motivator especially if the team has a lot of members. It is inspirational and can definitely keep an ADD comic on track. Not to mention, the ability to run jokes and also critique one other.

I found that these methods have helped me to stay on course and get stuff done!

Now to get focused and get that bitch finished!

PS…This is 2 weeks later from when I started typing this, lol

Finally finished…I’m Out!!
